Carpet Cleaners Kennington is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and contractors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with carpet, upholstery and rug cleaning services delivered in homes, offices and commercial premises.
Our primary objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our cleaning activities. We aim to identify, assess and control risks so far as is reasonably practicable, while delivering high quality cleaning services throughout our service area.
We will continually review and improve our practices, equipment and training to maintain high standards of safety for both our teams and our customers.
The management of Carpet Cleaners Kennington has overall responsibility for ensuring that this Health and Safety Policy is implemented, monitored and regularly reviewed. Management will:
Provide and maintain safe plant, equipment and cleaning machinery, including portable extraction units and other tools used for carpet and upholstery cleaning.
Ensure that all cleaning chemicals, stain removers and treatments are assessed and controlled in accordance with relevant regulations and industry guidance.
Carry out regular risk assessments for typical job types, including domestic, commercial and end of tenancy carpet cleaning.
Provide clear instructions, information, and supervision to ensure employees can work safely and efficiently.
Investigate all accidents, incidents and near misses with the aim of preventing recurrence.
All employees and operatives of Carpet Cleaners Kennington have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees are expected to:
Follow all training, instructions and safe systems of work provided by the company.
Use personal protective equipment supplied, such as gloves, masks, knee pads and eye protection where appropriate.
Report any hazards, defects in equipment or unsafe practices to management immediately.
Refrain from misusing or interfering with any equipment or safety measures provided for health and safety purposes.
Cooperate fully with management in implementing this policy and any associated procedures.
Before starting any carpet or upholstery cleaning job, our staff will conduct a site-specific assessment, checking access routes, trip hazards, electrical sockets, ventilation and any vulnerable items or surfaces. Identified risks will be reduced through practical control measures, such as safe cable routing, use of warning signs and careful equipment positioning.
Safe systems of work will be followed for all regular tasks, including machine operation, lifting and moving equipment, handling chemicals, and working in occupied premises. Additional precautions will be taken in high traffic areas, staircases, communal corridors and shared commercial spaces.
We recognise the risks associated with cleaning chemicals and solutions used in carpet and upholstery cleaning. All such substances are selected, stored and used in line with manufacturers instructions and applicable safety regulations.
Assessments are carried out for relevant substances, and our teams are trained in correct dilution, application and disposal methods. Staff are required to wear appropriate protective equipment when handling chemicals and to ensure that containers are clearly labelled and kept out of reach of children, pets and unauthorised persons during work on client premises.
All cleaning machinery, including extraction machines, hoses, wands and accessories, will be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure safe operation. Defective or damaged equipment is taken out of service until it has been repaired or replaced.
Our operatives are trained to use electrical equipment safely, to avoid overloading sockets, to keep cables organised and to protect clients from trip hazards. When working in wet areas or with water extraction, extra care is taken to prevent electrical hazards and ensure that equipment is used in suitable conditions.
Carpet cleaning often involves the movement of machines, hoses and cleaning products. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, staff receive training in safe lifting and carrying techniques, as well as in the use of handling aids where appropriate.
Work is planned to minimise unnecessary manual handling, and operatives are encouraged to take breaks and vary tasks to reduce strain. Any injury or discomfort associated with handling equipment must be reported so that adjustments can be made.
Respect for client property and personal safety is central to our approach. When working in homes, offices or commercial buildings, Carpet Cleaners Kennington employees will:
Identify and signpost any temporary hazards such as wet carpets, hoses and machinery.
Keep work areas as tidy as possible and ensure clear emergency access routes.
Secure equipment when left unattended and switch off machinery when not in use.
Follow any reasonable site-specific rules or procedures notified by the client.
All new employees receive health and safety induction training relevant to their role, including safe use of chemicals, equipment operation, personal protective equipment and emergency procedures. Ongoing refresher training is provided where necessary, and additional instruction is given when new machinery, products or methods are introduced.
Supervision levels are appropriate to the experience and competence of each worker, with particular attention given to new starters and those handling more complex tasks or larger commercial projects.
All accidents, near misses and incidents occurring during our cleaning operations must be reported promptly to management. Records are maintained and used to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Employees are briefed on what to do in the event of fire, chemical spills, electric shock, injury or other emergencies in client premises. Where relevant, staff will familiarise themselves with the building evacuation routes and assembly points on arrival.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically and whenever changes occur in our operations, legislation or industry best practice. Updates are communicated to all staff and incorporated into our working procedures and training.
Carpet Cleaners Kennington is committed to actively promoting a positive safety culture, encouraging the reporting of concerns and involving employees in the continuous improvement of health and safety performance across all cleaning services we provide.
